Where Are You From? (2019) addresses themes of immigrant identity and the merging of two cultures. After finding interest in weaving as an art form and its strong ties to Latin American culture, I began making numerous weavings and then reproducing school portraits of my younger self onto them as cyanotypes. The portraits serve as a representation of American culture contrasting with the hand-made weavings which read as a Latin American craft. The resulting work has become my way of reclaiming my identity as an immigrant as well as reconnecting with my own Latin American roots after I rejected much of it during my childhood and adolescence.
